‘Creating Opportunities’

Spring 22-23

Spring 1

Welcome back! We hope you had a lovely Christmas holiday. This term our topic is

Kensuke's Kingdom

We will be reading Kensuke's Kingdom in class and writing a diary entry as the character of Michael later on in the term. Do you know the name of the author of Kensuke's Kingdom?

We will also be looking at the artist Hokusai in detail and his painting 'The Great Wave' which inspired the cover of Kensuke's Kingdom. We will recreate the great wave in art by using watercolours, printing and in mosaic form.

Art Day

We had an Art Day where we spent the whole day doing art, as unfortunately our trip to the Tate Modern was cancelled. We looked at three different styles of art  and we made sculptures, installations and pop art. We learnt some great art techniques. At the end of the day we turned our own classes into an art gallery and had an exhibition of our own.

The Great Wave.

We looked at the artist Hokusai and his famous piece of artwork called ’The Great Wave’ which is also inspired the cover of the book ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ by Michael Morpurgo. We discussed the similarities and difference with other artists and exploring different art forms, skills and techniques. We created using watercolours, print and mosaics.

Church Visit

We visited our local church called St Laurence. We had a special talk by a special member of the church. He took us on a a tour and showed us the main features, and even special objects kept in a church. We even had a chance to see the clothes that the priest wears on different events like weddings, naming ceremonies and funerals.

RNLI-Royal National Lifeboat Institution

The RNLI is a charity that saves lives at sea. Pupils of Year 2 had a talk from a member of the RNLI Lifesaver to educate them about water safety; how to be safe near and in the water and what to do if anything goes wrong.
